Of all French food posters, Rudd’s charming Escargots Ménetrel is among the most recognizable and beloved, having been widely reproduced in small format. Yet, the original poster, in its dramatic 45" x 62" size, has remained elusive and rare. The turn of the last century was the golden age for advertising art, and producers of everything from tires to cigarette papers hired famous artists to design original posters to advertise their products. Among Madeira producers, only Blandy’s commissioned a poster that was to become a classic, this 1896 work by Maurice Realier-Dumas. This is an original 1896 printing backed on museum-quality linen.

Léon Dupin was a young self-taught artist influenced heavily by the posters of the Belle Epoque. Though he dabbled in caricatures and constructivist styles, his best works were art deco—most famous is his depiction of a jovial sailor carrying two gigantic cookies advertising Rita Biscuits as the “dessert de choix!” Dupin uses a similar approach by enlivening this charming ad for a vineyard treatment with the promise of “magnificent harvests!”
