“An absolutely superb set of wines.”
John Gilman, View from the Cellar
Connoisseurs have long revered Domaine Robert Chevillon for the startling transparency of their wines. Year in and year out, they express the terroir character of their Nuits-St.-Georges climats with crystalline clarity.
Chevillon’s beautiful 2013s show exactly why the domaine’s wines are consistently among Burgundy’s best bets. As View from the Cellar’s John Gilman has written, the 2013s “are beautifully structured wines chez Chevillon, with very suave textures to the tannins, great purity to their often quite black fruity personalities, and superb transparency.”
They are, in short, authentic Burgundy. That automatically puts them into the top 5% of Burgundy in terms of desirability, and also into a class of wines that is getting more expensive by the day.
But we recently landed a parcel of three of Chevillon’s finest 2013 premier crus—Vaucrains, Cailles and Roncières. And to go with them, we snagged another prize: the domaine’s 2013 old-vine villages cuvée, the NSG Vieilles Vignes.
And we can offer all four wines in a mixed 6-pack.
Robert’s sons Denis and Bertrand, who’ve run the domaine since 2000, took full advantage of the year’s low yields of tiny “shot” berries—caused by rain at flowering—to fashion wines of great concentration and creamy texture. The results are wines breathtaking in their balance, while offering superb aging potential.
The magic of the Chevillon wines from their 75- to 100-year-old Vaucrains and Cailles vines have made them those rare premier crus that are hunted down with the same ferocity as grands crus. Yet, the leap in quality made by the Roncières vines as they’ve reached the half-century mark has this cuvée hot on their heels.
And the similarly overachieving Vieilles Vignes produces a wine of premier cru quality in the sure hands of the Chevillon brothers, in a Nuits-St.-Georges of great complexity married from a number of old vines sourced from throughout the village.
