A Pair of Rare 1996 Barolos

From the vintage that many consider the greatest of the 1990s, two superb Barolos from Marco Parusso, who helped lead the modern movement in Barolo ten years earlier.

By 1996, Parusso had settled into a regime that contained elements both traditional and modern, and the wines show it in their balance of richness and expression, aided by the powerful structure of the ’96 vintage.

He made two enduring single-vineyard Barolos in 1996. Each is extremely rare today, and in fact neither cuvée has been made since the early 2000s. And both are from sections of the iconic Bussia cru of Monforte d’Alba.

The first—from Munie, which means “monks” in local dialect—is a south- to west-facing portion of Bussia. Rocche is a southeast-facing section that is a natural extension of Rocche di Castiglione Falletto. Both enjoy superb expositions in one of the most revered growing areas of Barolo.
