Essence of a Great Barolo Terroir

Over the past decade, La Morra’s Trediberri estate has emerged as one of Barolo’s fastest rising Old School stars.

The purity and Old School character of its Barolos have earned Trediberri a spot on Antonio Galloni’s short list of Piedmont’s “most promising estates … producers knocking on the door of the elite.”

Galloni has called winemaker Nicola Oberto “one of the most dynamic, emerging producers in Piedmont today,” making wines that “show tremendous purity and sophistication.” Even Nicola's basic 2015 and 2016 Barolos earned 94 points from Antonio.

Yet, the greatest evidence of Nicola’s tradition-based wisdom and artistry to date may be his 2018 Barolo del Comune di La Morra

This transcendent wine was created when Nicola chose not to produce his usual single-vineyard Barolo from Rocche dell’Annunziata, one of the Langhe’s undisputed grand crus. Instead he used that juice to turbo-charge his regular Barolo, creating a wine that is the essence of La Morra and its fabulous terroir in 2018.

The result is one of the top Barolos of the vintage. It is classic La Morra in its perfumed elegance and depth, and utterly transparent to its terroirs. And best of all, we can offer this hors classé Barolo for just $49.95 a bottle with the purchase of a 6-pack. Considering the great terroirs and Old-School skill that go into it, it’s an incredible buy.

Back Story
Trediberri was founded in 2007 when three partners—Federico Oberto, his son Nicola and Vladimiro Rambaldi—acquired five prime hectares in the La Morra cru of Berri, just over a mile from the village of La Morra. Three years earlier, Federico had retired after more than three decades in the cellar of Renato Ratti.

Federico had not only been mentored by one of Barolo’s iconic figures (Ratti), he was also descended from several generations of farmers with great holdings, most notably parcels in the heart of Rocche dell’Annunziata.

And Federico's wealth of knowledge has been passed on to Nicola, who has also had the opportunity to learn from La Morra's sole surviving Old School legend, Lorenzo Accomasso.

In the cellar, Nicola’s work is inspired by the time-honored methods of Barolo's Old School, with a three-week fermentation and maceration in concrete tanks, followed by two years aging in Slavonian oak botti by Garbellotto, the cooper favored by cantine Bartolo Mascarello, Cappellano and Giuseppe Rinaldi.

The 2018 Trediberri Barolo del Comune di La Morra is a complete, and very classical, expression of La Morra, testament to Nicola Oberto’s uncanny ability to find the essence of the village through his masterful blending.

As Galloni has written, “Readers will have a hard time finding a better example of the year at this level.” It deserves a place in any cellar devoted to classic Barolo.
