“Brilliant … head-spinning … great wine by any stretch of the imagination.”
Allen Meadows, Antonio Galloni & John Gilman on Patrick Bize’s Corton-Charlemagnes
In late 2013, Burgundy lost one of its masters at the too-young age of 61. Patrick had run his family domaine, Simon Bize, with skill and grace, elevating every vineyard holding. But it is his magical Corton-Charlemagne that connoisseurs will best remember.
Year in and year out, his transparent style expressed this singular grand cru’s character in spades. And while he only began working with his tiny plot in 1997, Bize’s prior quarter-century of experience enabled him to quickly make the most of it; a decade later he was making Corton-Charlemagne to rival the best.
In the waning years of his life, we succeeded in getting on the allocation list for this sought-after wine. We held on to our prizes; understanding their rarity, we just put them in our library. We accumulated six vintages, a complete run from 2006 to 2011. We’re offering them today as a 6-vintage vertical.
From the Tenderloin
The Bize domaine’s tiny plot of sélection massale vines, planted in 1938, is located in the vaunted en Charlemagne lieu-dit.
En Charlemagne is on the Pernand side of the Hill of Corton, the most ideal area for Chardonnay, due to its very rare for the Côte d’Or west through southwest exposure. High up on the steepest part of the slope, en Charlemagne can receive up to 14 hours of sunlight during the longest days of the growing season.
This unmatched luminosity, combined with the site’s thin white marl soil on a base of very hard limestone, gave Bize’s Corton-Charlemagne both its explosive richness and its striking minerality.
The grapes from Patrick’s old vines provided him with a concentrated essence of en Charlemagne character, and his flexibly traditional methods captured it every year, demonstrating both Bize’s brilliance and his remarkable consistency.
This is the rare opportunity to acquire the last six vintages made by Patrick.
