Clos des Goisses is not just one terroir, but many, divided into a number of distinct parcels. But the very heart of the vineyard consists of two lieux-dits, Les Grands Cintres and Les Petits Cintres. They are the warmest and steepest part of the Clos des Goisses slope, with only a thin layer of topsoil covering the pure chalk underneath.
This is where Goisses' oldest Pinot Noir vines are. And for the first time in 2006, Charles Philipponnat decided to produce a tiny amount of Les Cintres. With only 166 cases made, and barrel-fermented, it quickly became coveted by Clos des Goisses lovers.
The next Les Cintres to be released was the 2008, and needless to say, in this great vintage, it is epic.
Ratings are generally off the charts, with 97 from Stephan Reinhardt in the Wine Advocate, 96+ from Antonio Galloni and 96 from John Gilman.
